Dope is a film that came out in 2015, with a high focus on telling the story of regular people in the hood, with characters that you can relate to and seem familiar, utilizing a dramatic and comic approach to the story.  The film also has a high focus on hip hop music and culture, even utilizing a popularized slang of “Dope” which means it is very awesome and fantastic.  The film also centers around crime and drugs, school, community, and race.  My opinion is that it is a very well made movie and I thoroughly enjoyed the film.  Dope is literally a dope movie…

The film centers on 3 main characters, which are Malcolm Adekanbi, Jib, & Diggy.  They are all obsessed with golden era hip hop and are high school students and live in the “Bottoms” part of Inglewood, California.  They’re considered geeks and are bullied by gang members at times.  Malcolm has a dream to attend Harvard, however his counselor, dismisses his endeavors.  His counselor, Mr. Bailey, refers him to AJ for college admissions.

At this point, the trio head home from school only to almost be jumped by dope dealers and as well as avoiding a Blood set.  Malcolm befriends Dom, a dope dealer, and they start chatting.  Through a turn of events, he also meets Nakia, through Dom.  Dom takes a shine to Malcolm and their love of hip hop and he gets invited to Dom’s birthday party at a club.  Malcolm goes there with his two best friends.  This is where the story gets interesting and Malcolm and his two best friends end up involved in various drama involving drugs and parties…

I will leave the rest out, so as to not completely ruin the film for you…

Dope is a movie that is very good at telling a story, well planned out, and written well whereby the story and characters are likable and have a feeling of dejavu to even your own neighborhood and upbringing.  The stories and people are colorful, with fantastic delivery of comedy and crime drama rolled into one.  The music for the film is also dope, especially to people who like golden era hip hop more than modern mainstream music.  I highly recommend the film.

Batman Vs Superman: Dawn Of Justice – Trailer

Like all kids growing up, we all loved our comic book superheroes.

Who does not love the ultra wealthy Bruce Wayne, who dons a costume as Batman?

Who does not love the alien from Krypton, who grows up as Clark Kent and Superman on planet Earth?

Combine both and you have a classic comic and a classic movie concept…

It’s been made into a cartoon movie in the past, and also a comic book…

It begs the question of a battle between Batman against Superman.  Superman has powers that make any battle unfair for his opponent, while Batman has martial arts training with intricate intelligence and technology from wealth at his disposal.  Superman has a tremendous advantage, however, has a weakness against Kryptonite, that is known thus far.  Batman is human, however, can he come up with a martial arts and technological technique to gain an advantage?  Why are they fighting?  Aren’t they not colleagues against evil?  The movie will either follow the exact same plot or add new characteristics unique to the new movie dropping in 2016.  It will set a tone for awesome and you can view the trailer above…

MARCH 25 of 2016!!!!!!

Me, Earl & The Dying Girl – Screening Review

Me, Earl & The Dying Girl is a very touching, dramatic story filled with heartwarming realism & humor of a town, a group and collective of friends.  It is about Greg Gaines and his best friend Earl Jackson, and the days with their ill friend, Rachel, who has a bad case of cancer.  One thing you will notice from watching this movie, the characters, are familiar to you with deja vu.  It will remind you of your town, the eccentric lives of Greg and Earl, their families, and befriending Rachel, and her family.  Although not friends at first, Greg & Rachel develop a chemistry, and so does Earl too, where they become close friends.  I will end it off at that, as I do not want to ruin the movie for you, so you can enjoy the film.  It’s a well made movie, great acting, fantastic writing, and based off a legit book of the same name.  It is muy guapo.

Shanghai Tan 2 aka The Bund 2 – Theme Song by Frances Yip

Shanghai Tan 2 or The Bund 2, is a tumultuous series and story set in the rough and tumble life of Shanghai.  Back in the old school, it was an area known for gangsterism and triads, and was so known for this that the old school slang of “shanghaied” is the same meaning as “getting jooked”.  The story and film series stars Chow Yun Fat, who is known in Hong Kong and throughout the world, as really great at playing bad ass underworld types.  Here is the classic theme song by Frances Yip and has amazing instrumentals laying the back for her vocals.  This is a great song for any hip hop sampling artist to remix and chop up.
